How to Avoid Burnout as a Musician
𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐭 as a musician:
As someone who is a 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭 and an 𝐨𝐛𝐧𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐫, burnout is something I struggle with all the time.
I’m hoping that sharing my experience might help at least 𝐎𝐍𝐄 person out there who is going through something similar.
I would find myself…
🌑 Re-recording my singing videos 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 and 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 trying to find the 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 take
🌑 Spending 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒 trying to nail a 30-second section of a song (Ridiculous, right?)
🌑 Recording vocals and producing my original music and wasting so much time 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬.
What I’m doing to protect myself:
☀️ Knowing that there’s 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞. It’s unfair of me to put that pressure on myself— I would never expect it for my students, so why am I any different?
☀️ 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠! As long as it feels good to sing and is authentic to the piece or song I’m singing, it’s fine. There’s ways to work on your voice without obsessing!!!
☀️ Stop worrying about the opinions of others. Receiving feedback and working with peers is important for self development, but don’t let other people opinions consume your craft.
☀️ Post more on social media!!! Getting myself out there as a singer and teacher without obsessing about the quality of the content!
✨𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲✨
Taking time to rest and setting boundaries for yourself is one of the 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 things to do as a musician. There’s going to be times where you feel drained and passionless— give yourself a break. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭!
